CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a style of talk therapy, it suggests that our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are connected somehow. Take an example someone cuts you off in traffic, you might think that they don’t respect you or the traffic rules, you will feel upset and angry, and start speeding, trying to cut them off and teach them a lesson in driving or manners.
CBT is all about challenging those negative thoughts and providing better and more positive explanations. If we take the same example, instead of assuming the driver has a personal vendetta against you, which is highly unlikely, you might as well assume the driver is busy talking to his significant other on the phone, dropped their hot coffee in their lab, or their kids started a UFC session in the back seat.
When we offer an alternative and more constructive justification, we ease our minds and leave room for more important tasks for us to solve.
